Dungeons and Dragons

With No Short Rests

We met No Short Rests at UK Games Expo and got completely taken with their One Room One Shots.

They are small, self-contained Dungeons & Dragons adventures, each built around a single room or place. Clever, strange, beautifully made little things, with a lot more going on inside them than the name first suggests.

We got chatting, told them about Valley Rollers, and somewhere in the general Expo excitement the idea came up that they should come and run some with us.

And we are chuffed.

On 25 October, No Short Rests are coming up to Hebden Bridge to guest DM at Valley Rollers, and we will be playing two of their One Room One Shots.

Who are No Short Rests?

No Short Rests are an independent tabletop roleplaying publisher run by three friends who make adventures for people who like sitting round a table and seeing where a story takes them aka us.

Their One Room One Shots are what first caught our attention.

Each adventure is contained within one room or structure, but inside that space there is still a whole story to uncover. Things to notice, choices to make, puzzles to work through, creatures you may or may not want to disturb.

They are designed to be played in one sitting, which makes them a very excellent fit for the way we play at Valley Rollers.

What are we playing?

For this special we are running two different One Room One Shots.

They have very different moods, so you can choose the one that sounds most like your kind of afternoon.

Tomb of Grief

A 1st-level adventure

The land is cursed, and the trail leads to the tomb of an evil king.

Inside, there are undead, puzzles, and a story that has been waiting a long time for somebody to uncover it.

This is the more classic dungeon-crawl of the two. Dark corners, old secrets, things buried that perhaps had good reason to stay buried.

A very good place to start if you are new to Dungeons & Dragons.

Temple of the Forgotten Depths

A 5th-level adventure

Somewhere beneath the water is an ancient temple, and inside it is a relic said to hold power over the ocean.

The temple is flooding. There are things living down there.

This one is a little bigger, stranger, and more dangerous. You will have more powerful characters and quite a lot to deal with before the water catches up with you. A good call if you are a Valley Rollers regular.

Why we you both excited?

Pretty much how it goes is we find the adventures we want to run, prepare them, and bring them to the table ourselves.

This time, the people who made the adventures are coming too.

It feels like exactly the sort of thing we hoped Valley Rollers would make possible.
