Dungeons and Dragons

at Valley Rollers

Never played before? You’ll do just fine.

Our Dungeons & Dragons table is made for curious beginners, returning players, and veterans who fancy a good night round the table. You do not need to know the rules. You do not need to bring anything. You do not need to do a voice.

If you have always wanted to give D&D a go, this is a good place to start.

What is Dungeons & Dragons?

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game.

A group of people sit round a table and go on an adventure together. Each player takes on a character in the story, and one person, the Dungeon Master, runs the world around them. They describe what is happening, play the people you meet, and keep the adventure moving.

You are not trying to win against each other. You are playing through the story together.

So what do we actually do?

Mostly, you say what your character wants to do.

You might look round a room. Ask someone a question. Try to sneak past a guard. Climb through a window. Start a fight. Avoid a fight. Touch something you probably should not have touched.

The Dungeon Master tells you what happens next, and the story moves on from there.

If something is simple, it just happens. If something is risky or could go badly, you roll dice to see how it goes.

That is the basic shape of it. You do not need to memorise anything before you arrive.

What is a character?

Your character is the person you play in the adventure.

They will have their own strengths, skills, and style. Some are good in a fight. Some are sneaky. Some are charming. Some know magic. Some are a bit of a liability, which can also be fun.

You do not need to invent all of this yourself. We have characters ready for you to pick from, so you can just choose one and get stuck in.

How do you play a character?

You hold an idea of who that character is in your head. Then, very simply, you make choices from their point of view.

That can be as basic as:

“I want to look around.”
“I try to talk to them.”
“I feel scared or excited by the new object.”
“I do not trust that door at all.”

Just to be clear:

  • You don’t have to do "the voices", unless you want to.

  • You don’t have to act, unless you want to.

  • You can take a break whenever you want.

What kind of game do you run?

We play Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, as a one-shot.

That just means the adventure starts and finishes on the same night. You get a full story in one go, without needing to sign up for a long campaign or remember what happened a month ago.

Our table is friendly, mixed, and beginner-welcoming. You might be sat next to someone playing for the first time, or someone who has been rolling dice for years.

Either way, the aim is the same. Have a good night, play a fun adventure, and do not worry too much about getting everything perfect.

How the night works

This is not a drop-in table.

We run a set adventure with limited spaces, so you will need to book a seat in advance.

On the night, we will do a quick intro, get everyone settled, and then crack on with the game. We usually play for a couple of hours, take a break, then carry on until about 10pm.

T'Cure provide a tavern style stew for the half time break. It's delicious and excellent for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat alike. Come hungry.

What do I bring?

Just bring yourself.

We have the dice, character sheets, and pencils. We also have ready-made characters, so there is no homework to do beforehand.

No need to read the rulebook. No need to watch hours of videos. We will explain things as they come up and keep it moving.
